Melissa has been a practicing therapist for two years and is a Licensed Master Social Worker (#65029), and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (#14795) in the State of Texas. Melissa received a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies from Texas Woman’s University. She also earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. The training she received was in social work with a generalist practice foundation that included applied social work practice, community and administrative practice, human behavior and the social environment, research and evaluation, and social welfare policy. Melissa’s professional concentration included direct practice with an advanced specialty of mental health services.
Melissa completed the full EMDRIA Approved EMDR Therapist Training Program through Compassionworks and is currently a participant in additional consultations toward EMDR certification. Melissa is a certified EAGALA mental health professional and is skilled in using equine-assisted learning with clients. She also completed the Fundamentals of Natural Lifemanship training where she learned about Trauma Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to assist clients experiencing trauma based dysregulation, relational dysfunction, and maladaptive behaviors.
Melissa currently works at New Hope Counseling as a therapist providing individual therapy to children, adolescents, and adult clients. She also provides counseling to patients in a physical rehabilitation hospital. Her previous experience included working at an inpatient program in Denton as a lead therapist where she provided individual, family, and group therapy working with adults coping with chronic mental illness and addictions.
Melissa's specializations include anxiety, social anxiety, depression, addictions, codependency, trauma, PTSD, stress management, and self-esteem. The therapy method she uses is based on a humanistic perspective. She believes that a key component of successful therapy is to build the therapeutic alliance by creating a trusting relationship so the client feels comfortable sharing their feelings, insecurities, hopes, and dreams.
Melissa's approach to therapy is to meet the client where they are and listen to them without judgment or criticism. She uses methods and techniques to teach clients skills in self-regulation and stress reduction. She uses open-ended questioning that encourages the client to share their own ideas, thoughts, and feelings to encourage self-reflection, self-actualization, and empowerment. Clients are educated about mental health topics such as cognitive behavioral therapy, how the brain functions in times of crisis and stress, and various other mental health subjects.
Melissa enjoys spending her free time with her family. Her hobbies include traveling, working with horses, and reading or studying almost anything related to mental health, self-improvement, and spirituality.
Melissa is under clinical supervision with Megan Coit, LCSW.
